This big hunk of love is named Rosco! This sweet boy came to us recently from a rural shelter that was having trouble getting him adopted. Some people can't see past Rosco's "scary" look, but at Family Dog Rescue these big bully breeds melt our hearts! We knew we wanted to help Rosco find a wonderful family, so we agreed to take him in.

Rosco has acclimated quickly to the hustle and bustle of city living. Volunteers say he is the easiest large dog to walk! He is non-reactive, doesn't pull, and will stay focused on you if you bring treats! Rosco loves everyone he meets. Just like your typical bully breed he just loves people! He's been nothing but a big sweetheart with our volunteers, and especially loves our teen interns.

Rosco isn't too high energy and would be fine living in an apartment. A couple walks around your neighborhood and this guy will spend the rest of the time hanging out on your couch! He loves toys and treats, but his favorite activity is cuddling up next to a human. Rosco does well with most dogs and may be able to live with another female dog.

At around 90 pounds, Rosco truly is a gentle giant! He's only a couple years old and is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to be spoiled! We think he may be a pit bull/mastiff mix.

Here's what one of our volunteers had to say about Rosco:

"We had a great six-hour outing with Rosco today, both at our home and in Golden Gate Park. He was lovable as ever and even a little more mellow and guidable than the last time we took him out. He loves riding in the 4Runner with his head out the window. He readily jumps into or out of this high vehicle with just a little help. At home in the back patio he looks around a bit and then just settles into a shady spot. He was curious about a neighbor's gardener but never barked and then ignored him.
He was also comfortable indoors and on the hunt for a comfortable sofa. :) Later on we washed and shampooed him with ease with a garden hose - Rosco had no complaints!!

In GG Park he loved walking trails and smelling the landscape. He encountered some other dogs and, other than some mild interest, never showed any aggression.  While he pulled a bit on the lead at times but was easily controllable most of the time. After lots of walking he was quite thirsty and lapped up lots of water. When we paused to eat at a picnic table he happily and quietly sat in the shade under the table.

All in all it was a very enjoyable day with a sweet and lovable dog. Lots of licks!! :)"

 

And here is what Rosco's foster family says about him:

"Rosco is always happy to be with people and loves to touch, lick and jump up on you. He will settle down and lie next to you or on his back or partly on you. He loves to be stroked and patted and will often breathe heavily or make a little piggy oinking sound when stroked! 

 

Rosco is rarely if ever aggressive with other dogs, even small ones. He will show interest and some skittishness or playfulness when up close. He can get a little upset if another dog barks in his face. Rosco is eager for any outing at any time! He especially loves riding in a vehicle, either with his head out the window or horizontal on the seat with his nose pressed against a door. Any time you approach ANY vehicle door or tailgate he’s ready to jump in, even uninvited! He loves to run and will go for very long walks, but needs to drink water along the way. After a 1-2 hour walk he will definitely get a bit tired and is ready to rest. During the walks he does not disturb birds or other wildlife.

 

 

On the first night Rosco slept outside in the patio the whole night in the cool. He preferred to sleep on a chaise lounge chair with cushion rather than inside of his kennel with cushion. He slept soundly the whole night in a tight curled up position without making a single noise. The second night Rosco spent inside on a basement sofa and was also quiet the whole night. The next four nights he spent quietly inside his kennel in the patio (because we took away the cushions from the patio furniture). Every morning he slept until we went out to greet him about 8:30 a.m. Rosco generally does not bark when unprovoked. On rare occasion he will make a soft howling noise (like a coyote) when he sees something of interest or wants some attention. 

 

 

Overall, Rosco is a very lovable dog with excitable young dog behaviors. He could make a wonderful addition to a family with some indoor and outdoor space and a willingness to train him!"
